In the first part of the interview, Loulou Mifsud Bonnici started off by recounting the evacuation of her mother's family from Smyrna, Turkey during the final months of the Greco-Turkish War. Upon landing in Malta, the refugees had been quarantined and she had later met Loulou's father who she married. Loulou spoke about the first Italian bombings, the shelters, and the destruction of her childhood home in Sliema which had forced her family's relocation to Lija and then to Dingli Cliffs. She also insinuated at looting activities carried out by Air Raid Precautions (A.R.P.) personnel.
