The name Freddie Mizzi is synonymous with the virtuoso clarinet playing and also with swing “Freddie” style. Mizzi is Malta’s best known Clarinetist and certainly the most versatile. He has performed frequently in Malta and abroad. He was born in Valletta in October 1934 and has been a professional musician ever since his teens. He introduced in Malta many new and old works written for the clarinet. Mizzi obtained diplomas from the London College of Music. In 1971 he was selected one of the distinguished musicians to form part of the World Symphony Orchestra on tour in the USA. He introduced two new works at the Wignmore Hall in London, and in 1973 during Malta’s First International Arts Festival he played soloist. In 1977 he represented Malta at the European Arts Festival in Romania. Following the success he was invited to perform in Mannheim and London Barbican Centre. With his impeccable playing, he also entertained HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Queen Mother, Presidents of various countries and well known personalities. In 1985, he gave concerts at the Mediterranean Art Festival in France and Greece. Mizzi was appointed Professor of Clarinet in 1989 and in 1990 was awarded the Golden Clarinet. He is also regularly called upon to give lectures in music and has recorded various long plays and CDs.
Mizzi is married to Maria Spiteri and they have two daughters.
