Theme: Experiencing War: Survival, Shelter and Food
Maurice Mifsud Bonnici recalled watching refugees with carts laden with their personal belongings travelling with the hope of seeking shelter in villages in the rural areas. These were billeted in people’s houses and in churches and chapels in his hometown of Lija. Maurice also provided plenty of information about shelters. He mentioned how people dug private rooms where they could sleep. Others used to spend their time praying and telling jokes to pass the time. Hygiene was taken very seriously and shelters used to be inspected by the sanitary authorities.
