Theme: Experiencing War: Survival, Shelter and Food
In the first part of the interview, Maurice Mifsud Bonnici started by recounting his upbringing in pre-war Lija. He remembered the first air raids over Malta and the debilitating fear which had gripped him the first time bombs pounded the island. He talked about the internees at Fort San Salvatore, the black out and a diary he had kept during the war's duration. While attending Umberto Primo school in 1930s Valletta, Maurice described how flags used to be placed on a map of Abyssinia whenever an area had been overrun by the Italians. He also recounted two Fascist-era anthems students had been taught.
