Theme: Experiencing war - survival, shelter and food. Albert Ganado was born on the 9th of March 1924 in Valletta, the only male among 7 sisters. His mother was a housewife and his father was Judge Robert Ganado. Albert had practiced as a lawyer from 1947 till 2008 and he had also published in academic journals on various aspects of Maltese history, including art, legislation, politics and philately. One of his cousins was Herbert Ganado, a Maltese politician who, along with others, had been interned and deported during the Second World War.
Theme: Agriculture. Anthony Bugeja was born in 1928 in Haz-Zebbug. He had 4 siblings. His father was a builder and a part-time farmer whilst his mother was a housewife. Anthony used to work in agriculture. He lived in Haz-Zebbug and had 2 sons and a daughter.
Theme: Migration - British Expatriates. Arthur Wait was born at 'Ta-Cini' hospital, Santa Venera, Malta on the 9th of July 1940. He had one younger brother, Tony, and an older sister, Gladys. His father had served on minesweepers in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and afterwards was the Master-at-Arms’ right-hand man. His mother was a housewife. Between 1956 and 1958, Arthur was an Able Seaman and gunner for the Royal Navy, he worked on a salvage and mooring ship at Portland, Dorset, UK, c. 1968-1975 and he finally worked as a rigger with the Ministry of Defense at Portchester, UK, from around 1975 until retirement. He had two daughters, Tracy and Teresa and one son, David.
Theme: Agriculture. Carmelo Cortis was born on the 25th of September 1953 in Rabat. He had 10 siblings. His father was a farmer and his mother was a housewife. For over forty years Carmelo worked as a part-time farmer. He lived in Imtarfa and Rabat and had 3 children, Benny, Stanley, and Odette (Agius).
Carmelo La Magra was born in Santo Stefano Quisquina (Agrigento) on the 26th of April 1980. His family owned a bar. He has been the parish priest of Lampedusa since 2016.
Theme: Agriculture. Carmena Cortis was born on the 16th of June 1944 in Rabat. She had 7 siblings. Her parents were both farmers. She lived in Rabat, Malta had 3 children and was a housewife.
Theme: Agriculture in the 1880s - 1930s. Censu Borg 'Tal-Lira' was born in 1921 at Luqa. Throughout his life Censu had always worked in the fields. His father used to work the fields while his mother used to sell vegetables. Censu had started to work the fields, which were rented from the government, together with his father and his brother. Censu had 6 children, 5 boys and a girl and had always lived in Luqa. At the time of the interview he was doing minimal work in the fields, his sons had taken over.
Theme: Life of a Farmer. Coronato Calleja, known as Kurnatu, was born on the 3rd of October 1942 at Victoria, Gozo. He had 10 siblings. His father was a full time government employee and a part-time farmer whilst his mother was a housewife. Kurnatu had emigrated to Sydney and Queensland, Australia as a sugarcane worker for more than 5 years. When he came back to Malta he started working at 'Ta' Cenc' until he found a full-time government job and kept farming as a part-time job. Apart from the time he spent in Australia, he used to live in Victoria and Kercem, Gozo. He had a daughter and at the time of the interview he was a pensioner.
Ettore Raffi was born in Lampedusa on the 12th of November 1938 to a family of fishermen. He had two male siblings. He started working at sea when he was 15 years old and some of his destinations included Mississippi and Panama while he was a marine engineer. He left in 1982 when he became a janitor at a school in Lampedusa. He got married and had three children: two girls and a boy. He had always lived in Lampedusa.
Theme: The Craft of Farming in the Past and How it Changed. Filomena Bugeja (nee Vella) was born on 21st February, 1927 at Bingemma, Mgarr. She had 5 siblings. Her parents both worked on a farm. Her father died a few months after she was born. She worked on the farm as a child, then became a housewife. She had 9 children. Before she was married she was known as Ta' Mraden, after her marriage she was known as Ta' Borgu ta' Saver.
Frank Mifsud was born in Birzebbugia in 1951 in a family of five children. His father was a business owner and his mother was a housewife. During his working life, he had held various roles in the public sector:
- Clerk-typist - public service Labour Office in 1969;
- Clerk-typist - posts and phones in 1970;
- Ministry for Social Policy in 1984;
- Permanent Secretariat - Ministry of Health in 2006;
- CEO Heritage Malta in 2009.
