Storia archivistica

Born in Valletta on the 6th April 1929, Arrigo studied at the Lyceum and at the University of Perugia. He is the Doyen of broadcasters in Malta, having started his career as an announcer in 1947 with Redifflision (Malta) Ltd., which at the time provided broadcasting services through a wired network spread all over the island. He first caught the attention of listeners with his dramatised readings of Maltese novels, a programme, that is as popular now as when it started in 1948. It was also at this time that Arrigo joined The British Institute Players, which under the direction of professional producers brought over from London produced some excellent plays in which Arrigo often played the lead part. As a result of this acting experience Arrigo started producing radio-plays, some were by local authors, and others were BBC radio-plays which he translated into Maltese. When Redifflision (Malta) Ltd. expanded its services, the number of outside broadcasts increased, and he became known as the radio commentator par excellence for statal and religious occasions. In this capacity he has covered numerous important events which are now part of Malta’s history. In 1959 Arrigo went to the BBC (U.K.) to further his training. At the end of the training period he was asked to extend his stay for a fhrther nine months as a regular broadcaster on the General Overseas Service of the BBC (now the World Service). When Television Malta started its regular transmissions on the 29th September 1962, Airigo was chosen to inaugurate the Service, thus becoming the first person to appear on Maltese television. During his long career he has occupied important positions. These include that of Assistant Head of Radio Programmes, Head of Drama, Assistant Head of Xandir Malta, Head of Television and Director of Public Broadcasting Services. In 1995 he was awarded the Broadcasting Authority Trophy for outstanding services to broadcasting and on the occasion of Republic Day that same year he was honoured with the Midalja Ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika.
