Scope and content

The brown-coloured image is photo of the venerated Our Lady of Caraffa venerated at St John's Co-Cathedral, in the chapel which housed the image of Our Lady of Philermos, a much venerated and miraculous Byzintine icon already recorded in the 14th century on the island of Rhodes which the Order of St John brought with them in 1530. When Napoleone Bonaparte, in 1798, expelled the Order of St John’s from Malta, Grand Master Ferdinand Hompesch took it with him. However, after the wishes of pious Fra Gerolomo Caraffa, a 17th century copy of Our Lady of Lanciano (Matera), better known as Our Lady of Carafa, was removed from the Chapel of the langue of Italy in the same Co-Cathedral and today adorns the Chapel of Our Lady of Philermos. This memento commemorates the crowning of this famous image on the feast of Christ the King in 1954. At the back, there is a prayer of consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary and an indulgence is gained whenone recites this prayer for a whole month.
