The black and white image is a photo of the famous Franciscan friar Fra Diego Bonanno. Fra Diego Bonanno was born in Valletta in 1831. After joining the Order of Friars Minor as a lay brother, he embarked on the noble apostolate of collecting funds to provide suitable lodgings for difficult and abandoned girls. In 1905, he opened an institute in Hamrun (still in existence known as Ta’ Fra Diegu) to serve as a home for hundreds of girls. His saintly aim was to restore dignity and peace to prostitutes, the sick, the poor and the orphaned. In fact many despised him and even threatened him with death for his good work. The image is a memento commemorating the fiftieth anniversary from the death of Fra Diego. It was published by the Director of the Institute in the name of the children who were given care and support in this place.
