Scope and content

Fatimah was one of two maids which the Despott family had in their employ at their seaside villa in the Giorginpopili neighbourhood of Tripoli, Libya. According to Jean Borg, when communal violence used to break out between the Libyan Muslims and the Libyan Jews (which was common), Fatimah and the other maid, Inez (who was Jewish), used to come to blows. Anne Despott, Jean's mother, used to separate them for days by ordering one to stay on the upper floor while the other one was confined to the ground floor of the villa.
