Born in Birkirkara, Cassar Pullicino matriculated from the Royal University of Malta in 1938 and studied Maltese as part of an academic course of literature. He took employment with the government but still remained very active in several organizations. The University of Malta conferred upon him an Honorary M. Phil. Degree. Cassar Pullicino was awarded a British Council scholarship in librarianship to Leeds and London and he was the first Maltese to be elected Associate of the Library Association. He also served as assistant Director of Information; Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Industry; Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Health; Director of Industry and Librarian, Faculty of Theology. He was instrumental in the publication of significant works. His studies on Maltese history and folklore are interrelated and his research in these spheres is the hallmark of his literary career. He lectured to University students reading for BA in Maltese literature, folklore and social history. Cassar Pullicino’s literary output includes a collection of essays and short stories. His main contribution to the academic world is in the sphere of folklore. He published his research in numerous books and his scientific studies were complimented by his contacts with foreign experts. He also attended various international congresses and was a member of London’s Folklore Society and of the Accademia di Studi Superiori Phoenix (Bari) and was a founder member of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research. He published several papers in specialized periodicals and articles and studies of a historical and biographical nature. He gave a valuable contribution to the Maltese Archives Sector and was appointed as chairman or member of successive Archives Committees for the last thirty years.
He married Celine Bonett and they have two daughters.
