Caruana was born at Balzan on 7th April 1929 and studied at the Malta School of Arts, the Accademia Pietro Vannucci, Perugia, Istituto Statale per la Ceramica, Italy, the School of Arts & Craft, Detroit and privately under Victor Pasmore in London. He was a teacher of clay ceramics with the Education department and visiting lecture at the Sheffield College of Art. Caruana participated in more than 100 exhibitions both locally and abroad. His works have found wide recognition. Worth mentioning are his exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, at the Cathedral Museum, at the Museo Internazionale Ceramica d’Arte, Faenza, and at the Manchester City Art Gallery UK. Caruana has dominated the field of ceramics in Malta for a whole generation and generously assisted in the formation of several young artists. In 2001 the Accademia Pietro Vannucci, Perugia, Italy, elected him Accademio di Merito and in 2002 Caruana was elected by the American Government as a Fullbright scholar. His works are also found in permanent collections at the National Museum, Valletta, Withworth Art Gallery, Manchester, Galleria Cittadella, Ascona; Milan and Rome. His name is at the Park of Sculpture in Yorkshire and his Porta Del Terzo Millenio in Cervana di Roma is also very well noted. Caruana is the founder of St. Gabriel Band Club, Balzan Malta (1952).
Caruana is married to Mary Rose Buttigieg and they have two daughters.
