Busuttil, affectionately known as “Buzu”, and considered one of the best-ever Maltese footballers was born in Rabat on the 29th February 1964. He started playing football at Rabat Football Club junior teams. He played his first match on the 16th September 1979, with Rabat. In 1980-81 he was voted as Malta’s Best Junior Player and best Second Division Player. In 1981-82 he was Top Scorer and voted Best Player of the First Division. In seasons 1982-83 and 1985-86 he won the Footballer of the Year Award. He played for nine seasons with Rabat, helping the Ajax with promotions up to the Premier Division, winning the championship twice, the Euro Cup, the Trophy and Super Cup, the Second Division Knock Out and the First Division Championship. In 1987-88 Busuttil was transferred to the Italian Club Verbiana. After a year he was transferred to Belgium First Division- KRC Genk where he played for six seasons. He established himself as one of the top foreign players in Belgium. In 1994-95 he was transferred from Genk to Sliema Wanderers. Being an automated choice for the national team, he has scored an all time record of 23 goals. In 1988 he scored 10 goals for the National XI finishing as joint top scorer of Europe. He played his last game against Iceland on the 25th April 2001. He retired as a footballer on the 18th August 2001, and now runs his own football school.
Busuttil is married to Julie Brincat and they have two children.
