Welcome to the National Archives of Malta’s (NAM) online catalogue. The National Archives of Malta is a government entity which preserves, maintains, and provides access to material of historical and cultural value belonging to the Maltese nation.

Archival records come in many different forms, from paper files, letters, handwritten bound volumes, press cuttings, printed records, photographic and audiovisual material, maps, architectural drawings, oral history recordings, microfilm, etc. This material undergoes adequate archival processes which include sorting, conservation, digitization, cataloguing and research. Following review of accessibility conditions, material is then made accessible via our Reading Rooms or this online catalogue.

Here you will discover some of the records which are housed in our repositories, some of which are accompanied by their digital surrogate. Should a digital surrogate not be available, kindly email us on customercare.archives@gov.mt. Please indicate the ‘Reference code’ and ‘Title’ of the record you wish to access. You will then be given an appointment to view the record in one of our Reading Rooms.

Research

Global Search
The quickest way to browse our catalogue is by typing a keyword, name, or phrase in the search bar above. The catalogue will immediately load any catalogued Items which mention the keyword, name, or phrase you entered.

Advanced Search
To further narrow your search, you can choose ‘Advanced Search’ from the gear icon on the left side of the search bar. This option will give you more fields to filter additional information.

In addition, you can change and refine the search criteria by using the “Find results with:” option which will allow you to search:

  • with all the words (AND)
  • with at least one of the words (OR)
  • without the words (NOT)

On the left-hand side of this page, under ‘Browse by’ heading, you may also choose one of the hyperlinks to help with your search.

Archival Descriptions
Clicking on this hyperlink, will give you a list of catalogued and available Fonds (collections).

Functions, Subjects, Places
These hyperlinks will assist you in searching by profession, subject keyword, or specific countries/towns/villages.

Digital Objects
This hyperlink will take you to all our born-digital or digitized records which have been made available for research. To refine your search, select one or more of the options available on the left-hand side menu.

Authority Records
These are the authorized forms of name combined with other bibliographic information that identify and describe the names of corporate bodies, persons, or families. Searching by ‘Authority Record’, will direct you to Fonds (collections) or Items (records) related to that particular corporate body, person, or family.
