A Harley Street dental surgeon who built a good reputation not only in dentistry, Messina Ferrante is also an educator and sport administrator.
Born in Sliema in 1938, Messina Ferrante was educated at St Aloysius College and at the age of 15 years he entered the RUM where he graduated B.Ch.D. (1960). He is in his 46th year of his profession and still rendering his service to the Maltese Community. He furthered his studies at Guy’s Hospital and Royal Dental Hospital, London, being awarded the LDSRCS (Eng.) by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1966.
Nominated for a Canadian scholarship, Messina Ferrante was awarded a Fellowship at the Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Dental Clinic in New York.
In 1965 Messina Ferrante became a Fellow of the International College of Dental Surgeons (FICD) (USA) and in 1975 Member of the Pierre Fauchard Dental Academy (MPFA) in view of his outstanding service to dentistry. Tn 1985 he attended a post-graduate dental course at the Academie d’Art Dentare (Geneve).
Messina Ferrante was examiner and demonstrator of dentistry at the UM (1980-84), also serving as examiner for foreign dental surgeons who applied for a licence to practise dentistry. He is founder-member and Malta’s representative on the executive committee of the European Dental Society; a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM); and is a member of the Medical Council. In 2004 he was the Medical Council’s representative on the Specialists Accreditation Committee and on MEUSAC, Malta EU Steering Action Committee (2002-03).
He was honoured with the Distinguished Leadership Award and is included in the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership. President of the Malta College of Dental Surgeons, he has contributed a great deal to better the medical and dental profession in Malta.
Besides being a Sportsman who excelled in various discipines Messina Ferrante is also known as a hardworking sport administrator, and for the past four decades, occupied several important positions in this field. He was appointed by various Prime Ministers to sit on various boards like the National Sports Board, the First World Amateur Billiards Championship, Consultative Board of the Malta Sports Council, Institute for Physical Education and Sports at the University of Malta and chairman of the Sports-for-All Movement.
At Sliema Wanderers FC he occupied various posts; he was vice-president for ten years and president (1987-93). He was Sliema’s MFA council representative (1971-93), chairman of various boards, and also council member/vice-president of the MFA for 30 years (1970-2000). He was also chairman of FIFA’s project on the development of football as introduced by Pele. In 1980 he was awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy and in i990 he was a finalist of the Official of the Year Award. Chairman of the Premier League Standing Committee, and Women’s Football League. Messina Ferrante was instrumental in introducing women’s football in Malta. It is due to his constant endeavour, dedication, belief and vision during the difficult formative years that Malta is currently participating in the international scene.
Herbert Messina Ferrante was a founder member and later president of the Self Employed Union. Served on the Executive Committee of the Nationalist Party and on the Sliema and Attard district committees. Successfully contested two consecutive local council elections in the name of the Nationalist Party.
His regular contributions in the local press, radio and television reflect his civic sense and educational qualities. Continually campaigning on the dangers of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, poor diets, bad eating habits and bullying.
Messina Ferrante is a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Cavaliere al Merito del Sacro Militare Ordine Costantiniano di San Giorgio.
Hobbies include gardening, reading and collecting autographed autobiographies. He met a number of celebrities ranging from royalties, politicians, film stars to great sport administrators and world class players.
Messina Ferrante married Elizabeth Zammit in 1969 and they have a son, Edward.
