Born in Sliema in 1930, Lanfranco was educated at Stella Mans College and St Michael’s College of Education. He pursued other courses at the UM and Dale Field Studies Centre, Wales.
Lanfranco taught at De La Salle College, Birgu (1949- 50) and in various government primary schools, secondary, and technical schools, teaching science, geography, and biology (1965-79), biology at advanced level in government evening classes, and St Edward’s College. He was also lecturer in science, teaching methods, and social studies at St Michael’s College of Education (1966-73). He also taught biology at the Upper Secondary School (1973-79), where he continued as head of biology department and assistant head of school (1980-91).
A member of various educational boards and committees, Lanfranco was also member of several local and foreign scientific societies. Very active on committees of many cultural bodies, he was president, Malta Geographical Society, Old Michaelians Association, Science Teachers Association, the Cactus and Succulents Society of Malta, and Malta Folklore Society. He was the first president of the Natural History Society of Malta (now SSCN) which he founded in 1962, the Malta Ornithological Society (now Birdlife Malta, M.O.S), International Council for Bird Preservation (Malta), University of Malta Biology Society, and the Ghaqda Dilettanti Mudelli ta’ Knejjes. For several years he was committee or council member of the Malta Historical Society, Din L-Art Heiwa, Malta Union of Teachers, Moviment tal-Malti, Malta Horticultural Society, Ghaqda Hbieb tal-Presepju, Old Stelmarians Association, and several other associations.
Lanfranco was editor of News & Views, The Maltese Naturalist, Kakti u Sukkolenti Ohra, L-lmnara, The Teacher, and L-Imnara (Folklore Society). He participated in conferences and seminars and has given numerous broadcasts on radio and TV. He has organized exhibitions, mostly on flora, fauna, geology, science, and folklore.
The author of numerous articles, Lanfranco, besides participating in art and other exhibitions, has organized thematic exhibitions for various societies and organizations. He uses his own art and photography to illustrate his lectures, articles, TV programmes and books.
His books include Maltese Mammals, Guide to the Flora of Malta, Field Guide to the Flora of Malta, Complete Guide to the Fishes of Malta, The Fish Around Malta, Duwa u Semm fil-Hxejjex Maltin, Hxejjex Medicinali u Ohrajn fil-Gzejjer Maltin, L-istorja tat-Trasport f’Malta, L-Istatwi Titulari u l- Istatwarji Taghhom, Drawwiet u Tradlzzjonijiet, Medicina Popolari ta’ l-Imghoddi fll-Gzejjer Maltin, Xoghol, Gahgih u Snajja Ii Spiccaw, and is co-author of the Red Data Book for the Maltese Islands, Flora u Fawna ta’ Malta, and others.
Lanfranco was awarded the Bronze Medal of Merit by the Confederation of Civic Councils (1969) and the Midalja Ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika (MQR) (1996).
Lanfranco is married Salvina Bonnici and they have a son, Sandro, and a daughter, Graziella.
