Juan Gambina started his vocal studies locally and, after winning a scholarship from the Italian Cultural Institute, he continued his studies in Parma with Carlo Bergonzi, in Milan with Pier Miranda Ferraro, in Palermo with Elizabeth Lombardini Smith, in Bologna with William Matteuzzi, and recently in Modena with Mro. Angelo Bertacchi. He was also selected to attend master-classes with Magda Olivero and Romolo Gazzani.
Winning various international singing competitions, Gambina has sung II Duca di Mantova in Verdi’s Regoletto, Aifredo in Verdi’s La Traviata, Edgardo and Arturo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Werther in Massenet’s Werther, Ferrando in Mozart’s Cos! Fan Tutte, Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Boheme, Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula, Fritz in Mascagni’s L’Amico Fritz, Kalaf in Busoni’s Turandot, Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Candide in Bernstein’s Candide, Arlecchino in Leoncavallo’s I Fagliacci, and Edmondo in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut from the traditional repertoire and Guillaume Appolinaire in Panni’s The Banquet, Trimalchio in Maderna’s Satyricon, and the Soldier in Stravinsky’s Mavra from the contemporary repertoire. From the sacred repertoire, Gamhina has sung Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor and Messa da Requiem, Handel’s The Messiah, Ramirez’s Misa Crolla, and Nani’s Messa da Requiem.
Gambina has partnered renowned colleagues such as Rolando Penerai, Mariella Devia, Marcelo Alvarez, Raina Kabaiwanska, Enzo Dara, Nicola Martinucci, Ruggero Raimondi, Giuseppe Giacomini, Maria Dragoni, Miriam Gauci, and Lando Bartolini, under the batons of Yuri Ahronovitch, Isaac Karabchevsky, Romano Gandolfi, Robert Craft, Donato Renzetti, Marcello Panni, and Steven Marcurio at the Gran Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Real Teatro di San Carlo, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Teatro Municipal de Rio di Janiero, Sferisterio di Macerata, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, and the Osaka Festival Hall (Japan), the State Opera of Pusan (South Korea), and the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid (Spain), amongst others.
Numerous performances by Gambina have been recorded for CD, television, and radio, namely Lucia di Lammermoor from Teatro San Carlo Napoli (Stream TV and Radio Rai 3), In Memoriam Dylan Thomas from Teatro Olimpico Roma (Rai 3 TV), La Finta I’arigina from Teatro Politeama Palermo (CD recording by Bongiovanni), Satyricon from Teatro Lauri Rossi Macerata (Rai SAT International TV, Radio Rai 3), and the Great Mass in C Minor (CD recording with Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo).
