Archival history

Edward Fenech Adami was born in 1934. He was educated at the Jesuit College and the University of Malta, where he first studied economics and the classics and later law. He joined Christian Democratic Nationalist Party (PN) in the early 1960s. He entered Parliament in 1969 and in 1977, he was elected party leader, succeeding Dr Giorgio Borg Olivier. Dr Fenech Adami became Prime Minister in 1987 as a result of the Nationalist Party’s victory in that year’s general election. He led the PN to another electoral victory in 1992. The PN lost the 1996 election. The period in opposition was, however, short-lived as the Labour government was unable to retain its majority in Parliament. In September 1998 Dr Fenech Adami returned to the office at the head of a new Nationalist government. Dr Fenech Adami was sworn in as Prime Minister for the fourth time following a further electoral victory in April 2003. The governments led by Prime Minister Fenech Adami have laid emphasis on the updating of the infrastructure; the modernisation of the legal framework of business and commerce; the liberalisation of trade; and the deregulation of telecommunications, banking and financial services. Malta has begun a period of integration with the European Union when its first application for membership was presented in 1990. Malta will join the EU on 1 May 2004. Dr Fenech Adami resigned from leader of the Nationalist Party on 7th February 2004 and from Prime Minister on …………… March 2004.
Dr Edward Fenech Adami is married to Mary Sciberras and they have five children.
